Analysis Paralysis!

As  a lawyer I am constantly being challenged to to keep an eye on the ‘Big Picture’ (context) as well as the detail (content). Over analysis can lead to paralysis! Its all about perspective. One very useful tool to use in moments when the longer and harder you spend looking at the detail the further away you seem from the answer is to re-focus globally on what your clients are wanting to achieve and to meditate quietly on that while taking a break and doing something else. It is amazing how quickly we can ‘intuit’ vital clues when allowing our sub-conscious mind to do its job.

Why Business Coaching?

Why business coaching? Do you

  • own your business or does it own you?
  • spend more time working in your business than working on your business?
  • have a clear direction for where you want your business to go?
  • really believe that continuing to do what you’ve always done in business will get you to where you want to go in any market?
  • have clear and specific long term business objective supported by shorter term key (1 -5 years) goals?
  • have a 12 month strategic marketing plan designed to drive customers through your doors?
  • know who your target customers are and why they would use you?
  • know your unique points of difference that help you stand out above your competition?
  • regularly analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and potential threats for your business?
  • feel satisfied with the level of rewards you are currently getting from your business or do you want something more?
  • know how valuable you business is and how much you could sell it for?

Just Joking!

Hold onto your seat

During a trial an eminent psychologist was called to testify. A severe, no-nonsense professional, she sat down in the witness chair, unaware that its rear legs were set precariously on the back of the raised platform. “Will you state your name?” she was asked.

Tilting back in her chair, she opened her mouth to answer, but instead catapulted head-over-heels backward and landed in a stack of exhibits and recording equipment. Everyone watched in stunned silence as she extricated herself, rearranged her dishevelled dress and hair, and was reseated on the witness stand. The glare she directed at onlookers dared anyone to so much as smirk.

“Well, Doctor,” continued the lawyer without changing expression, “we could start with an easier question.”

Why Legal Coaching?

My experience acquired through working with a number of law firms is that while most lawyers are good at being lawyers they are not necessarily good managers or business owners.

Some bigger firms employ professional managers to carry out this role however the tendency is for most firms is to spread the responsibilities between Managing Partners and Office Managers neither of whom have any real training or experience at building and running a business.

My Story!

When I cast my mind back to the 1970’s I well remember my decision to embark on a course of study at Victoria University that if I was successful would lead me to a career as a successful lawyer.

This period of time had been rather traumatic for me with my father who having been ill for some time had died during my seventh form year at Tauranga Boy’s College. My father’s passing had left me shell-shocked and without a strong male influence at a crucial time in my life.
